Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level names remained running.
